When Mrs. Fruit and I were coming up, back in the day...(I just ran out of cliches)...we didn't know any young, lady-loving hotties, ala Lindsay Lohan. And Ms. Lohan is hot, even if I am way too old for her, and even if her yen for chemical supplementation leaves a lot to be desired.
We tried to recall out lesbians, circa early 80's, and came up short. That was when Navratilova and Billie Jean King were still calling themselves bi. And Elton John too, actually. He married a woman in 1983 or thereabouts.
I still can't think of one famous lesbian from back then. The lesbians I thought I knew---they were closeted---were athletic and mannish. They all seemed butch. The Lipstick Lesbian had yet to officially evolve. Which is what Kari and I eventually became. Now, most young women--gay or bi---are indistinguishable from their hetero counterparts.
If I were to reduce the cultural history of American lesbians to a trite formula, it would be: first, it was butch/femme (which I find abhorrent, for so many reasons, but whatever); then all butch; now, it's predominantly femme (although there are margins on the Margin: enclaves of all kinds).
